Georgia Marble Quarry Tours
Only once a year can the public view the largest open pit marble quarries in the world, and tours to the sites are available exclusively during Pickens County's Annual Georgia Marble Festival held October 6 & 7, 2012. The festival celebrates one of Georgia's most prized and beautiful natural resources available. For decades Georgia Marble has been mined and used to create historic architecture around the world, including the Archives Building in Atlanta, the New York Stock Exchange and the Supreme Court. This year's tours offer individuals a chance to view marble in its natural form, visit several historic sites associated with the marble industry, and a chance to learn about the history of Georgia Marble. There will be tours of the Historic Pink Marble Mansion, once lived in by Colonel Sam Tate, founder of the Georgia Marble Industry.
